FFF and Happy Birthday to TINA TURNER

Another birthday for Femme Fatale Friday as we celebrate one of the greatest entertainers of all time, and an epic icon of music, Tina Turner πŸ’–

Anna Mae Bullock was born on November 26th 1939, she began her career in 1957 as part of, Turner's Kings of Rhythm, being called, Little Ann.

In 1960 she was introduced as, Tina Turner on a duet, with Ike Turner, and the team became one of the biggest musical forces with incredible hits like, Proud Mary, River Deep-Mountain High, and, Natbush City Limits.  And, she appeared in the film, Tommy, along with The Who, Ann-Margret and others, it remains one of the most iconic rock music motion pictures of all time.

Her infamous relationship with Ike ended in 1976 and the star continued to perform their original songs.  Her divorce was final in 1978 but their label released two more albums under their name.  After that she spent several years as more of a "nostalgic act" playing hotel ballrooms.

But in 1981, Rod Stewart asked Tina to perform "Hot Legs" with him on an episode of Saturday Night LIVE.  She then started opening for the Rolling Stones, appearing with Mick on stage for some duets.

In 1983 she was signed to Capitol Records and released the album, Private Dancer, which ended up going 5X Platinum and relaunching her career for a completely new era and generations.  To this day, it's considered one of the greatest comebacks in musical history.

In 1984 she achieved her one and only #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, with "What's Love Got to Do With It" but would go on to have numerous Top 10 singles like,  "Better Be Good To Me" and "Private Dancer".  In 1985 she would go on to co-star with Mel Gibson in, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and score another Top 10 with, "We Don't Need Another Hero".

Turner's star has only gotten brighter since then, cementing her as one of the greatest female legends of rock and roll, considered by many to be the, Queen of Rock N Roll.

She is one of the most powerful stage performers of all time, always including incredible dance numbers as part of her shows, she was a force on stage, and noted for one of the most impressive pair of legs of all time.  Proud Mary still is one of the most incredible songs of all time to me and always will be.

Happy Birthday, Tina Turner!

Happy Birthday & Happy Freaky Friday to Jodie Foster

Given certain circumstances, I thought I'd forgo the usual name for the weekly post, and just wish a grand, Happy Birthday to one of the finest actresses of our age, Jodie Foster.

To simply address her as an, Academy Award Winner, even adding the word "multiple" doesn't seem to do justice to her spectacular, and often overlooked career.

One of the best things about Foster is her life of steering clear of most scandals and bad press, but the one she had is more than enough for a lifetime, and we'll skip discussion of it on this one.

Foster's career started almost by accident, as her mom had totted her along to an audition for her older brother, in a Coppertone commercial in 1965, and the casting agents took a shine to her.  She and her brother would go on to do many commercial roles up until 1969, that year she had a reccurring role on, The Courtship of Eddie's Father, starring Bill Bixby.

It was in the 1970's that her life would change forever as she was cast in two films by famed director, Martin Scorcese, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, and then, as a child prostitute in, Taxi Driver.  For this role Foster had to undergo psychiatric assessment and was always accompanied on set by a social worker.  Her older sister would "stand in" for her during the more sexual scenes.

It was during this film that she was allowed to develop her own character and realized that acting was an artistic craft rather than just acting like a kid in front of the camera, for it, she was nominated for an Academy Award.

Later she would return to Disney for another memorable role, Freaky Friday, where her teen character switched bodies with her mother, it was a box office smash and would later be remade.  She would also make the Disney film, Candleshoe, starring opposite, David Niven.

In 1980 she began as a full time student at Yale University, she put college first and would only make films during her summer breaks.

It was in college that she really began to take her career as an actress more seriously and stopped looking at it as an "unintelligent profession", she wanted to take the next steps in more serious films.

In 1988 she had her "breakthrough" role as a rape survivor in the film, The Accused, based on a real case, and tackled the real world problem of "victim blaming" in cases like it.  Due to the films content, the production was trying on both cast and crew, especially when they filmed the rape scene, Foster was not happy with her performance in the film, and thought it would end her career, instead it was a major success and Foster received an Oscar and Golden Globe for her performance.

In 1991 she would take on her most famous role, FBI trainee, Clarice Starling in, Silence of the Lambs, opposite Anthony Hopkins as the bone-chilling, Hannibal Lecter.  Both characters are considered two of the best cinematic hero's and villains of all time, like her previous film Taxi Driver, Silence of the Lambs is one of the films preserved in the, National Film Registry.

In 1994 she would replace Meg Ryan in the western-comedy remake of a classic television show, Maverick, costarring with Mel Gibson, and televisions original Maverick, James Garner.  This is my personal favorite of her career, because she and her fellow cast seemed to genuinely have fun making the film.

Foster has started her own production company and gone on to star in many more films and even take charge behind the camera, directing films and episodes of hit television shows like, Orange is the New Black.

One of the things that I've kept from discussing but been sharing in pictures is that Foster is one of Hollywood's most underrated beauties, and even though not always showing it in film, has always kept herself in great shape, she really is one of Hollywood's most naturally sexy women as well, but has only used her looks when a part specifically calls for it.  Foster is one of the great Class Acts of Hollywood.

It is with great respect and deep admiration that I wish to once again say, Happy Birthday Jodie Foster. πŸ’˜

Throwback Thursday : Happy Birthday Mickey Mouse

Happy Birthday to one of the great American Icons, Mickey Mouse.

It was on this day in 1928 that Steamboat Willie debuted in theaters and gave us a truly classic character for our nation to embrace.

Over the last 93 years, Mickey Mouse has grown to being beyond a household name, he's become part of the fabric of our culture, and Disney with him.

Walt Disney designed Mickey, whose full name is Michael Theodore Mouse, in a garage after being inspired by a little mouse running around.

Mickey's legacy has helped create over 130 feature length animated films, over 300 live-action films, nearly two dozen theme parks and almost every type of merchandise you can imagine.

More than that, Mickey and his friends have created millions upon millions dreams and dreams come true, for children of all ages around the world.

Happy Birthday to a Radio Legend

Happy Birthday to the late, great, Dick Powell, know to many back in the golden days of radio as, Richard Diamond Private Detective.

Normally it's Story Time Sunday over on my facebook pages and I like to share spoken classic word stories from different eras.

Richard Diamond Private Detective is one of my all time favorites, not only do you get a great and fun adventure from this wise cracking gum shoe, but you usually got a song at the end of the episode, as Diamond would sing to his red head sweetheart, Helen Asher (Virginia Gregg).

Powell was cast as Phillip Marlowe, Private Eye in the film, Murder, My Sweet. He also played other hard-boiled detective characters on radio and screen.  One of the funniest parts of Richard Diamond was that he would poke fun at his former role as, Marlowe, on occasion asking if they've cancelled the Phillip Marlowe  show yet.

With all the parts he played, Richard Diamond is easily his more remembered and beloved.

From solving the mystery of a haunted house to saving a tempermental seal, his adventures were full of action but always light hearted and quick witted, with plenty of one liners and zingers, Diamond would fire them off at anyone, faster than his gun.

Many of Powell's great adventures and laughs can be heard on Sirius/XM Radio's, Radio Spirits (channel 148) or on CD from the Radio Spirits website.  BIG Thanks to Greg Bell media for keeping this classic radio programs, and the memory of Dick Powell alive and well.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Powell.

Femme Fatale Friday : ANNE HATHAWAY

A very Happy Birthday to the amazing πŸ’– Anne Hathaway πŸ’– who is also this weeks, Femme Fatale.

Born in Brooklyn New York (you can see that side come out a time or two in, Dark Knight Rises) in 1982 and named after the bride of, William Shakespeare's wife, to parents originally from Philadelphia, her mother an actress, whose father was a prominent Philly radio personality and her father a lawyer.

In high school she was nominated for the Paper Mill's Rising Star Award for best high school performance in the state of New Jersey.  She was also the first and only teen admitted to the award-winning acting program at The Barrow Group of New York, performing 2 concerts at Carnegie Hall as a member of the All-Eastern US High School Honors Choir.

Hathaway's first major role was on the short lives show, Get Real, but it was her lead in the films, The Princess Diaries (2001), that got the worlds attention and captured a lot of hearts, including mine. πŸ˜‰  It couldn't have been easy that early on playing opposite screen legend, Julie Andrews, but it spawned a very successful sequel (2004), it was the filming schedule for that sequel that would cost her the female lead role in, Phantom of the Opera, as Hathaway was one of New York's leading sopranos and has an amazing voice.

Hathaway was also well known early for her sensuality and confidence as a model.  She would follow in Andrews footsteps of stepping away from family friendly roles as she appeared topless in the film, Havoc (2005).  She has been quoted as saying that she doesn't mind being naked for a role if it serves a purpose for the film.

Gary Marshall, director of, The Princess Diaries said, "The multi-talented Hathaway is a combination of Julia Roberts, Audrey Hepburn and Judy Garland."  Quite the honor to be put into a category with such legends so early on in her career.

Known by Annie, to her friends, she's shown herself to be bold and proud of her NYC life at public appearances.

In 2012 was cast in, Les Miserables, suggested for the role by Hugh Jackman and went on to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, for the role she also won BAFTA Award, Critic's Choice Award, Golden Globe Award and SAG Award.

Also in 2012 was cast as, Selina Kyle aka Catwoman in, The Dark Knight Rises.  I hope that someday she also finds her way into the, MCU.

Hathaway also co-starred in Alice in Wonderland (2010) & Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016), with Johnny Depp.

Hathaway was given a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2019.  She is married with two sons.

Not only one of the hottest (in many ways) actresses of the last decade but also one of the most powerful in the acting world, turning down numerous parts over "creative differences", being very choosey about how she is portrayed on screen.

Anne Hathaway is one of my absolute favorites and I wish her a very wonderful Birthday weekend! πŸ’˜

Happy Birthday to a 3 Time Playboy Playmate

πŸ’˜ Marilyn Waltz, one of only two women to be featured as monthly Playmates on three different occasions, today would be her 90th Birthday, and she is this weeks, Femme Fatale Friday. πŸ’˜

Born on November fifth, 1931 in Waokesha, Wisconsin and grew up dreaming to be a movie star.

The shapely and sunny blond did some modeling before being discovered and used the name, Margaret Scott for her first Playboy spread in February in 1954.

She came back under her name, Marilyn Waltz and appeared in the Playboy centerfold for April 1954.

Then one year later, do to her popularity, she graced the centerfold again in April 1955.

It wasn't until 1996, while researching photos for the upcoming book, The Playmate Book (which I highly recommend for all fans), that Hugh Hefner figured out that Margaret Scott and Marilyn Waltz were the same person, but by then, she had become a part Playboy history.

Outside of Playboy, Waltz did modeling, television commercials and some work as a singer but was only ever in one feature film, Love Me Madly, in 1954.

After Playboy Waltz had a successful real estate practice in California until 1993 when she moved to Oregon.  She married in 1958 and had two children.  Marilyn passed away at her home in Oregon on December 23rd 2006. πŸ’˜

Born in Moscow Russia, Nastia Liukin would become an American Sweetheart in Gymnastics, today she turns 31. πŸŽ‰πŸ†πŸ’

Liukin began studying gymnastics at only 3, both her parents were coaches and she was, "always hanging around the gym" both literally and figuratively.

She earned 15 Gold Medals, 14 Silver and 3 Bronze, throughout the Olympics, Pan-Am Games, Pan-Rim Games and Nationals.

Even after a possible career ending ankle injury in 2007, she still competed and won gold for several years.

Liukin has become an analyst for Gymnastics broadcasts starting in 2012 for NBC Sports.

In 2009 she began the Nastia Liukin Fund, that aids gymnastics programs across the United States in conjunction with the, USA Gymnastics and since 2010, ALL net proceeds from their programs go to the fund.

Happy Birthday to The Gill Man

Only three days from Halloween and we celebrate a man behind a mask, of one of the most iconic monsters in cinema history, actor, Ben Chapman, who would have been 93 today.

Chapman was born in Oakland California on October 29th 1928.  He would serve in the 1st Marine Division of the United States Marines and becoming a Real Estate Executive before being cast as the, Creature From the Black Lagoon.

Stories would circulate that Chapman won numerous honors as a Marine but unfortunately these would prove to be false, the origin of the stories is unknown, but he did serve his country with distinction and was awarded and honorable discharge after serving in the Korean War.

Chapman would be cast as the creature due to his large stature of 6'5", which was huge for his day in Hollywood, producers wanted a very imposing creature, and Chapman was, on the land anyway.  Local Florida diver, Ricou Browning would be cast as the creature underwater.  If you look at the picture above, you will see the chest plate of Chapmans suit, the center pieces were not there on Brownings much smaller suit, but you'd never notice the difference until you could see them side by side, of which NO photo exists.

To fans, Chapman was known, as he was with the cast, a gentle giant.  He would go on to make hundreds of appearances at conventions and collector shows, greeting fans from around the world with a smile as big as the man.

The Creature from the Black Lagoon remains one of the most beloved of the Universal Monsters franchise and is arguably the most marketed of all the monsters, he even had his own slot machine in Las Vegas casinos.

The film was unique to the franchise due to its release in 3-D and also that it was one of the first ones released to television syndication.

Along with finding it on the DVD/BluRay sets, a behind the scenes feature called, Back to the Black Lagoon, can be found on Youtube and is well worth the watch.

Happy Birthday, Mr Ben Chapman, you are still loved and dearly missed.

Femme Fatale Friday for my favorite Bond Girl of all time

πŸ’˜  Happy Birthday to Kristina Wayborn, my favorite Bond Girl of all time for this weeks, Femme Fatale Friday.

Born Britt-Ingea Johansson in Nybro Sweden in 1950, she was Miss Sweden in 1970, then was a Semi-Finalist for Miss Universe, while the same year being elected Miss Scandinavia.

Her breakout role came in, The Silent Lovers (1980) when she portrayed Greta Garbo.  Even though Wayborn speaks English with a flawless American accent, she adopted a thick Swedish accent for the role of Garbo, even all the cast & crew were fooled until she suddenly started speaking with her regular voice on set.  Wayborn claims she was blackballed by the films producer for jilting his advances for her to become his girlfriend.

After her role in, The Silent Lovers and her popular poster with a tiger 🐯, James Bond producers took notice of her.  Wayborn was originally considered for the female lead in 1981's, For Your Eyes Only but was later cast as Magda in 1983's, Octopussy.  Her appearance made Wayborn a world wide sex symbol.

Even though she had a very athletic background, Wayborn broke several toes when she kicked a bazooka out of the hands of one of Kamal's henchmen in the climactic final fight scene at his palace.  The bazooka was supposed to have been replaced with a plastic one for the stunt, but someone screwed up.

Wayborn seemed to have a knack for the fight scenes, displaying a skill for Martial Arts and amazing agility, she was known for "beating up" several of Kamal's henchmen in some of the fight scenes.

Her famous scene of backflipping off out the window and sliding down to the ground was offered to a stuntwoman but Wayburn demanded to do the scene herself, and got it on the first take.

Wayborn did many television appearances; The Love Boat, McGyver, Airwolf, Dallas, Baywatch and many others. πŸ“Ί

Happy Birthday to Kristina Wayborn, who will always be my favorite James Bond "Girl"! πŸ’“

Scooby Doo, 52 years old ... in human years...

Scooby Doo, where are you?  We've been asking that question since this day in 1969, Happy Anniversary/Birthday to one of the most famous pups in history, beloved by tens-of-millions all over the world.

The series was created by Joe Ruby & Ken Spears who also created DynoMutt Dog Wonder, Help! It's the Hair Bear Bunch and Jabber Jaw.

The went on to assemble, Ruby-Spears Productions that would give Saturday mornings to, Fangface, Plastic Man, Saturday Supercade, Mister T, The Chipmunks and the Salkinds Saturday morning version of, Superman.  The production company would later be bought out by Hanna-Barbera.

The original cast features Don Messick as Scooby Doo (Papa Smurf, Bamm Bamm Ruble, Muttley, Astro).  Casey Kasem as Shaggy (American Top 40 Countdown, Robin the Boy Wonder when Burt Ward wasn't playing the part).  Frank Welker as Freddy (Megatron, Dr Claw, Ray Stanz on The Real Ghostbusters and would replace Lorenzo Music as Garfield after Music's passing).  Stefanianna Chritopherson would play Daphne Blake in Season one, then Heather North would step into the role for season 2 & 3.  Nicole Jaffe portrayed Velma Dinkley in Season 1 & 2 but would be replaced by Pat Stevens in Season 3.

The characters continue to appear in animate films and two somewhat forgettable live-action films.  With a throwback to the classic "New Scooby Doo Movies" they have been teaming the gang with people like legendary rock band, KISS and the stars of the WWE.

The original three seasons is still seen as the best of the best!

Hong Kong Phooey: 47 Years of being Number One

For 47 years today, the Number One Super Guy has been entertaining us and protecting the city from evil-doers, Happy Birthday to, Hong Kong Phooey! 🍰

It was on this day in 1974 that Hanna-Barbera introduced to kids on Saturday mornings.  Even though it seems like we grew up with him for years, there were only 16 episodes of the original show.

The show centers around a mild-mannered janitor at the local police station, with Sergeant Flint in charge, Rosemary the telephone operator and the stations trusty cat, Spot, also Hong Kong Phooey's sidekick (pun intended).  When trouble starts brewing, Henry jumps into a filing cabinet drawers, down the chute to his trusty Phooey-mobile, and the chaos just gets better.

The shows theme song is one of the most memorable and legendary of Saturday Morning Cartoons, even being rereleased by the, Butthole Surfers (guess they couldn't find a real band). πŸ˜†

The cast is a whos-who of the day in television and cartoon voice acting...

Scatman Crothers starred as Phooey and his alter-ego, Henry.  Crothers also voiced Meadowlark Lemon in almost all the Harlem Globetrotters cartoon incarnations, as well as Jazz on the original, Transformers and most other cartoons of the age.

Crothers also appeared on many television shows, Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Mannix, The Incredible Hulk, Hart To Hart and, Kolchak the Night Stalker.  He also appeared in, Twilight Zone : The Movie, Zapped and, The Shining.

Kathy Gors voiced, Rosemary, the telephone operator, and also voices for, Inch High Private Eye, Valley of the Dinosaurs and many others.

Joe E Ross was Sergeant Flint, but is better remembered for, It's The Hair Bear Bunch, but did voices for dozens of cartoons and classic radio comedies & drama.

Then there is, Don Mesick, in the cartoon world, the biggest name on the list, for decades he was the voice of, Scooby Doo himself.  Mesick also provided the famous snickering laugh for Muttley and the wise, Papa Smurf on, the Smurfs.

Other cartoon voice legends like Frank Welker and Casey Kasum would also be heard on the show.

With that kind of "star power" it's amazing the show didn't last longer but the writing just wasn't there, cheesy and corny were the standard and the show really went overboard with it, glad to see the character stayed around for The Great Race and the Laff-A-Lympics.

Comedy legend, Eddie Murphy attempted a short for making a full length motion picture of the character, and if you've seen it, you know why we're glad it never took off, it was beyond terrible.

Happy Birthday Mike Shannon

68 young years in the world and 50 years in Baseball, Mike Shannon is a true treasure to the St. Louis Cardinals, the state of Missouri and to Sports Broadcasting.

Born Thomas Michael Shannon, he was the second oldest of six kids, raised on the south side of St. Louis.  His senior year in high school he was, Player of the Year in Football and Basketball (only student ever to win both in the same year) ... but not...? okay LOL  He went on to play football at the University of Missouri but would leave in 1958 to begin his baseball career with the Cardinals.  His former coach, Frank Broyles said that if Shannon had stayed at MU Football, he might have won the Heisman.

With the Cardinals as a player, he helped the team to two World Championships in 1964 and 1967, in July of 66 he was named NL Player of the Month.  Shannon hit the final home run in the original Busch Stadium and then hit the first homerun in the second Busch Stadium, his playing career was cut short in 1970 when he was diagnosed with a kidney disease.  He would go on to be part of three more World Championships as part of the Cardinals broadcast team.

In 1971 he began in the radio broadcast booth alongside the legendary, Jack Buck and was partnered with him for almost 30 years, in 2002 Shannon was named as the lead broadcaster, and he's been there ever since. Shannon was inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2014 and in 2016 he moved to only broadcasting home games, 2021 will be his final season broadcasting for the team.

For many years he was the proprietor of, Mike Shannon's Steak & Seafood House in downtown St. Louis (I've got four of the original dinner menus) and still has two, Mike Shannon's Grill, one in Edwardsville IL and one, that many eat at, in the St Louis airport, I always stop in for a bite when traveling.

Growing up a Royals fan, I missed the last part of the Jack Buck era, but since becoming a Cardinals fan, Mike Shannon has been the The Man when it comes to the radio calls of the Cards games and it's not going to be the same without him.

Happy Birthday Mike, and Thank You. πŸ’–⚾

My sports collection shelf, dedicated to Mike Shannon, just to the left is a couple of things for Michael Wacha (wacha wacha) πŸ˜†
